New COVID-19 Variants Trigger Case Surge Across Asia

Asia on Alert Again as COVID-19 Cases Climb

Just as the world moves on from the pandemic, Asia faces a new wave of infections. As of early May 2025, Hong Kong reported 31 severe cases in a single week—the highest in over a year. Singapore followed closely with a 28% spike, totaling 14,200 new infections.

JN.1 Sub-Variants Identified as Key Drivers

LF.7 and NB.1.8—offshoots of the JN.1 variant—are named as the main culprits. While not more lethal, they spread rapidly, especially in densely populated areas. Singapore’s Ministry of Health emphasizes the surge is due to fading immunity rather than a more aggressive virus.

Traces in Wastewater, Mild but Worrying Symptoms

The virus has been detected in wastewater, indicating silent spread. Common symptoms include cough, brain fog, and conjunctivitis. Though not yet an emergency, health authorities are recommending booster shots and mask use in public spaces.
